This year, come be dazzled by the 15 young women selected for "Bridge Builders & Other Unconventional Women". Come see them dance on flying two by four's, flipping with brooms, and also perform their own inspired choreography. Each show is followed by a Question and Answer discussion with the young artists.
Our 2010 summer season is based on Flyaway's award winning "The Ballad of Polly Ann," which won an Isadora Duncan special achievement award in 2010. "Polly Ann" celebrates the experience of women who built the Bay Area's bridges. The workshop is led by Jo Kreiter, in collaboration with Flyaway's seasoned company members Jennifer Chien, Kelly Kemp and Alayna Stroud. The young artists come to Flyaway from the Mission, Bayview Hunter's Point, the Avenues, South of Market and Daly City.
Inspired by the company's mission to make dances that live at the intersection of acrobatic spectacle and social justice, Flyaway Productions' Arts and Activism Apprenticeship Program provides 15 young artists a paid summer apprenticeship, facilitating both dance-making and community–based activism. The program takes place every other summer at CounterPULSE (http://www.counterpulse.org) in San Francisco. CounterPULSE is our generous community partner for this apprenticeship.
The program is designed for low-income young women ages 14-20 who are strongly interested in performing, making positive change in the world and can commit to attending the entire seven weeks of the program. No previous dance experience is necessary. We bring together 15 young women from the Bay Area for seven weeks to:
- Get hands-on experience in contemporary and aerial (off the ground) dance
- Earn a generous summer stipend
- Create original dances for performance
- Learn and perform Flyaway's professional dance repertory with working dance artists
- Research and carry out an activism project in our community
- Connect with young women across neighborhoods, schools, ethnicity, sexual orientation

Past themes have included:
Genetically Modified Foods and their effect on people's daily lives, inspired by company repertory, "Whose Seeds These Are, 2005"
Truth-Telling in the political arena, inspired by company repertory, "Lies You Can Dance To, 2008"
